I’m taking a break from writing for a while and have embarked on a new venture. I’ve always wanted to play the piano. I’ve tried a couple of times, but gave up for one reason or another. Took too much time away from writing, for one thing. But when my elderly uncle died and left me his piano, I decided that such a beautiful instrument could not be left sitting idle, and it needed to be played, so this was the time for me to make a serious effort. It’s a lovely old upright, made in Toronto in 1906 by Gerard Heintzman for my great grandmother, who was a classically trained pianist, and it’s in perfect condition, even down to the original ivory keys.
My teacher is a delightful young woman who lives just round the corner. She teaches mainly kids, so that’s how I’m learning. Short, fun pieces–I’m working on Bill Grogan’s Goat at the moment–and her enthusiasm really carries me along. She’s Chinese, and brings sheet music that has the titles of the songs written in Mandarin, so as a bonus, I might learn a few words of Mandarin.
Any other late learners out there? How’s it going with you? All words of wisdom and encouragement are very welcome.
I started at 18, having played the violin before. I’ve always wanted to play the piano but couldn’t afford one. I loved learning to play it a bit. I don’t have room for it in my new home but I keep dreaming that one day . . . The affair has never ended, and I miss it just as I miss nature, the sea, etc. So you’re in for a treat, I think!

I applaud your effort and wish you well in this enterprise. I suspect that there will be satisfaction in any level achieved and the sounds you make will be rewarding. I love pianos and that one is a beauty.

It’s amazing how much satisfaction I get out of just the simplest pieces! And they do sound great. It is a wonderful piano.

I’ve followed your outstanding writing career ever since you left San Juan. Roberto & I are in No. Virginia helping out with our daughter & 3 grand-daughters. He started piano classes with a wonderful Bulgarian, Slavka. I just finished a spy novel and work as an interpreter in VA. Best to you and Jim. Visit us!

I’m really enjoying it, Arnoldo. Can play a few very simple pieces now, and it is so satisfying. I also play duets with my teacher–my part is simple, hers is real music, and it’s amazing how wonderful it sounds.
